Our decision to stay for the games causes major changes in our planning. According to our travel guide Buzios at the Costa do Sol was a favourite seaside resort of Brigitte Bardot in the sixties. She described the sea as “sparkling blue champagne”. It is a nice, very touristic town, skyscrapers are not allowed. The beaches are beautiful and Michel finds, with the newly purchased second-hand bike, fishshops at the harbour. Prawns, fresh fish and squid finally return to our menu. Buzios is a peninsula with an indented coastline with pristine hinterland and 26 beaches. On the way back we discover by chance the whitest sand dunes and most azure sea we ever saw, dazzling white beaches and turquoise water make us believe we are in the Caribbean.
We are happy with our stay in Rio during the Olympic games. We have seen wonderful volleyball matches on the beach and in the hall, we saw the first day of the heptathlon with Nafi Thiam, where she broke the world record high jump in that discipline, the qualification of Milanov in the discus throw, the victory of the Belgian hockey team against India (3-1) and the improvement of the world record in the 10,000m for women. The trips from het campsite with the well organized public transport are tiring, time consuming and unhealthy due to the air conditioning. We cannot get in time for events beginning at 9.30 am. Once we sleep in the apartment of Miet and Hans on Copacabana and one night we book a hotel room. At no time we are feeling unsafe during transport and security measures are impressive. The days we do not attend a game we stay on the campsite or at the beach of Piratininga, which faces Copacabana at the other side of the bay. Michel takes the bike to have some exercise for his knee. He has an appointment to have it examined in Roeselare on 5 September. Before we travel back to Uruguay (2000 km from here) we plan a visit the waterfalls at Iguazu, this time on the Brazilian side.
