LITTLE COMFORT AND LOTS OF NOISE 16/1 – 14/2/24

The troubles in Oman, which block the shipment, at the border with Dubai are short-lived and the shipment from Dubai is on its way. The parts are supposed to arrive on January 26, it cannot be faster because the man in Dubai did not choose an “express” formula. We enthusiastically announce the expected delivery date to the people at Toyota in the hope that they will adjust their schedule. The days fly by because there is no much stress for the time being. After half a week of surfing and calling, Michel manages to rent a bike and have it delivered to the loft. Away from the city there is a lot of unspoilt nature and it is wonderful to cycle, only the stray dogs occasionally cause an unwelcome tension. Roos takes a trip to the Hacienda de la Luz, a cocoa farm in Comalcalco and we eat yummy chocolate for a couple of days.

Roos continues to look for sporting options but in vain, you have to be a member of the club and take an annual subscription. Alex thinks there is a possibility to swim in the city’s swimming pool and is astonished when he hears and sees the subscription  conditions. The parts are delivered a day earlier and on Friday we can take them to the garage, the responsible manager promises that work will start the following Monday. Of course, that is not the case and the start is only on Thursday. On Friday there is a message that one of the parts does not fit, Michel ask to use the old piece. After a few phone calls, e-mails and research, it is clear that it concerns two different parts, which the Toyota mechanic should have known. These incredible bad experiences pile up and make matters worse, we also get the bad news that we have to leave the loft because it can be rented for a month. Fortunately, Alex has a cousin who is  furnishing flats in the centre of the city. When we make an exploratory visit, we find that there is still a lot of work to be done before we move in the next day. We have our doubts about the feasibility. On Sunday we get a first phone call with the message that they have not been able to connect the electricity, a second to say that we have to drive ourselves with a pick-up to move our belongings. We sleep one more night in the loft to move early the next morning. On the spot, we see that promises are not kept and we have to move three times, once because there is no running water, toilets are not flushing or that the wrong bedding was bought. The next morning there is still no water in the shower and we have to go out for breakfast. As to comfort there is already a big improvement by the evening of the second day and after Michel has cleaned we can also cook and do the dishes and take cold showers. Our annoyance grows and we don’t want to pay the full price because nothing works properly, The negotiations are a bit difficult but we get two nights free and the third at half price. There is a lot of hard work to be done, the dust and noise is part of it. Renting a hotel room is not an option because a lot of material was taken out of the tsjolbak to give us a little more comfort. Hopeful news comes from the Toyota garage: the works will be completed in three days. Our new home is located in a rich, secure residential area. The houses are built above and around garages, three garages are no exception! The streets are a bit bumpy, but there is no litter lying around. There is a laguna nearby and Roos takes some pictures of crocodiles (the Mexican call them cocodrilos), herons and a raccoon. After three days, Michel is invited for a test drive and the tsjolbak is running completely fine. We buy another new battery. Michel still has work to do to restore the electrical power inside, then we can make a trip to the coast of 210 km and do a drive in the sand on the beach in 4×4 to make sure everything is working properly.

A cleaning and washing day follows and on Wednesday 14 February we can hit the road again, after a waiting period of 2 months and 9 days.

WEINIG COMFORT EN VEEL LAWAAI 16/1 – 13/2/24

De strubbelingen in Oman, die de zending blokkeren, aan de grens met Dubai zijn van korte duur en de verzending uit Dubai wordt afgewerkt. De stukken zouden toekomen op 26 januari, sneller kan niet omdat de man in Dubai geen “express” formule heeft gekozen. Enthousiast melden we de vermoedelijke leverdatum aan de mensen van Toyota in de hoop dat ze hun planning zullen aanpassen. De dagen vliegen voorbij omdat we voorlopig weinig stress hebben. Michel slaagt erin om na een halve week surfen en bellen een fiets te huren en deze aan de loft te laten bezorgen. Weg van de stad is er veel ongerepte natuur en het is er heerlijk fietsen, alleen de loslopende honden zorgen af en toe voor een ongezonde spanning. Roos doet een uitstap naar de Hacienda de la Luz, een cacaoboerderij in Comalcalco en we eten een paar dagen lekkere chocolade.

Roos gaat verder op zoek naar sportieve ontspanningsmogelijkheden maar vangt bot, je moet lid zijn van de club en een jaarabonnement hebben. Alex denkt dat er een mogelijkheid is om te zwemmen in de accommodaties van de stad maar valt achterover als hij hoort en ziet wat de condities zijn voor je toegelaten wordt.

De stukken zijn een dag vroeger in ons bezit en op vrijdag kunnen we ze naar de garage brengen, de verantwoordelijke chef belooft dat er de volgende maandag zal gestart worden met e werken. Uiteraard is dat niet het geval en is de start pas op donderdag. Op vrijdag komt er bericht dat een van de stukken niet past, Michel beslist dan maar om het oude stuk te gebruiken. Na een paar telefoontjes, mailtjes en opzoekingswerk is het duidelijk dat het over twee verschillende onderdelen gaat maar in de garage hadden ze dat niet door. Deze ongelofelijk slechte ervaringen stapelen zich op en tot overmaat van ramp krijgen we ook nog de slechte tijding dat we de loft moeten verlaten omdat die voor een maand kan verhuurd worden. Gelukkig vindt Alex een oplossing in het centrum. Als we een verkennend bezoekje brengen stellen we vast dat er nog heel veel werk is voor we er ‘s anderdaags gaan intrekken. We hebben zo onze bedenkingen over de haalbaarheid.

Op zondag  krijgen we een eerste telefoon met de mededeling dat het niet gelukt is om de elektriciteit aan te sluiten een tweede om te zeggen dat we zelf moeten rijden met een pick-up om onze inboedel te verhuizen. We slapen nog een nacht in de loft om de volgende morgen vroeg te verhuizen. Ter plaatse stellen we vast dat de gemaakte beloftes niet ingelost zijn en moeten we drie keer van slaapkamer veranderen omdat er ofwel geen water is, de toiletten niet doorspoelen of dat men het verkeerde beddengoed gekocht heeft. De volgende ochtend en de dag erop is er nog steeds geen water in douche en moeten we buitenshuis ontbijten. Qua comfort en er is reeds een flinke verbetering tegen de avond van de tweede dag en nadat Michel heeft schoongemaakt kunnen we ook koken en afwassen. Onze ergernis groeit en we willen niet de volle prijs betalen want niets werkt naar behoren, De onderhandelingen verlopen een beetje moeilijk maar we krijgen twee nachten gratis en de derde aan halve prijs. Er wordt hard gewerkt, het stof en het lawaai hoort erbij. Een hotelkamer huren is geen optie want veel materiaal werd uit de tsjolbak gehaald om ons wat meer comfort te geven. Uit de Toyota garage komt hoopvol nieuws: de werken zullen over drie dagen voltooid zijn. Onze nieuwe woonst ligt in een rijke beveiligde residentiële wijk. De huizen zijn gebouwd boven en rondom garages, drie garages zijn geen uitzondering! De straten zijn wat hobbelig, maar er is geen rondslingerend vuil.

Er is een laguna in de buurt en Roos maakt er enkele foto’s van krokodillen, reigers en een wasbeer. Na drie dagen wordt Michel uitgenodigd voor een testrit en de tsjolbak blijkt helemaal in orde te zijn. We kopen nog een nieuwe batterij. Michel heeft nog werk om de elektrische stroom binnenin te herstellen, daarna kunnen we een uitstap maken naar de kust van 210 km en doen we een rit in het zand op het strand in 4×4 om zeker te zijn dat alles naar behoren werkt.

Dan volgt er nog een schoonmaak- en wasdag en op woensdag 14 februari kunnen we weer op pad,  na een wachttijd van 2 maanden en 9 dagen.
