Een tijd geleden beslisten we de terugreis naar Ecuador uit te stellen tot er een veilig vaccin beschikbaar zou zijn. Tussen de Corona-opflakkeringen door en na het beëindigen van de werkzaamheden aan ons terras doen we twee tripjes naar Frankrijk en één weekenduitstap naar Nederland met onze Iveco camper. Op 6 augustus vertrekken we voor onbepaalde tijd naar Frankrijk. Een honderdtal km voor Le Crotoy aan de Somme mist Michel, in een schaars verlicht toilet van een café, twee treden van een trapje en scheurt zijn achillespees, verdere reisplannen vallen in het water. We blijven nog enkele dagen op een camping in het mooie Le Tréport, hoog gelegen op een falaise. Roos neemt, met mondmasker op, de funiculaire (kabelbaan) om naar het strand en het commercieel centrum te gaan. Twee vrienden, Luc en Dirk, komen ons ophalen. Michel keert met Luc naar huis terug en Dirk rijdt met de Iveco en Roos als passagier. Nu, twee maanden later is Michels hiel nog niet hersteld en zit zijn been nog steeds in een brace. Onze geplande vlucht op 20 september werd geschrapt en er worden twee vouchers toegekend die geldig zijn tot eind 2021. We hebben dus geen enkel idee wanneer we zullen terugreizen naar Ecuador. Wat we wel weten is dat de Tsjolbak er nog goed uitziet, omdat we regelmatig communiceren met Hans van Finca Sommerwind, waar hij is gestald, en dat ervoor wordt gezorgd. Ondanks het feit dat vanaf 1 oktober het verbod op internationaal vliegen is opgeheven, blijven we liever in België want qua gezondheidsinfrastructuur is de toestand in Ecuador beslist minder goed. Daarbij komt nog dat Michel een lange revalidatie voor de boeg heeft.
Het is geleden van 2010 dat we een herfst en winter in België meemaken, maar gezien de omstandigheden zit er niets anders op dan te beamen: Oost-West thuis best.

In between the Corona flares and after finishing the work on our terrace, we make two trips to France and one excursion to the Netherlands with our Iveco camper van. On the 6th of August we leave for France for an indefinite period of time. About a hundred km before Le Crotoy on the Somme, Michel is missing, in a scarcely lit toilet of a café, two stair steps. His Achilles tendon is torn, which means the end of further travel plans fa. We stay a few more days on a campsite in beautiful Le Tréport, high up on a falaise. Roos, wearing a mouth mask, takes the funicular to go to the beach and the commercial centre. Two friends, Luc and Dirk, come to pick us up. Michel returns home with Luc and Dirk drives the Iveco with Roos as passenger. Now, two months later Michels heel has not recovered yet and his leg is still in a brace. Our scheduled flight on 20 September is cancelled and two vouchers are awarded valid until the end of 2021. We have no idea when we will travel back to Ecuador. What we do know is that the Tsjolbak still looks good, because we communicate regularly with Hans of Finca Sommerwind, where it is stalled, and that good care is taken of it. Despite the fact that the ban on international flights has been lifted since 1 October, we prefer to stay in Belgium, because the health infrastructure in Ecuador is certainly not as good. Moreover, Michel has a long period of rehabilitation ahead of him. Last time we were in Belgium during autumn and winter was in 2010, but considering the circumstances, we have no choice but to agree: East west home is best!
